Fibromyalgia (FM) is a condition not widely understood by modern western medical standards, with no known cure.
Symptoms include widespread chronic musculoskeletal pain, with particularly tense muscle groupings most commonly found across the neck, shoulders, back and chest, which are often accompanied by other symptoms of chronic fatigue, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and sleep disorders.
According to the NHS FIbromyalgia is often triggered by a stressful event which can be either related to a physical or psychological (emotional) trauma, such as an injury, a serious infection, surgery, a bereavement or sense of loss, including relationship issues.
Conventional treatments typically involve high levels of prescription medications including non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), analgesics, opioids, anticonvulsants, muscle relaxants and antidepressants, which all to some degree will come with potential adverse side effects and or dependency issues.
From the perspective of Chinese medicine the theory is that the pain associated with FM is generated by the stagnation of liver energy (Liver Qi) and blood stasis. Often this stagnation is aggravated by the presence of cold and damp within the body, while for others damp and heat may be part of their condition.
Below is a quote taken from the ancient Chinese text known as the Huang Di Nei Jing . It is considered by many to be one of the defining principles of acupuncture and roughly translates as follows.
“If there is free flow, there is no pain. If there is pain, there is lack of free flow.”
The treatment principles in Chinese medicine look to restore this free flow of energy around the body, expel cold or heat and resolve damp if present. These aims can be achieved through the application of acupuncture needles, but also the modalities of cupping, Gua-sha (scraping/rubbing of the skin), moxibustion (burning of mugwort leaves) on affected areas, to warm cold areas of the body, and appropriate lifestyle advice particularly surrounding dietary choices and exercise can all be used to achieve the ultimate goals of pain reduction, and the restoration of physical functionality once the personal root of your condition is identified.
